Ongoing instances of police brutality have led celebrities to use their platforms to unapologetically voice their thoughts, and the latest to use music as a conversation starter is Miguel. The singer shared a demo titled "How Many," which is inspired by #BlackLivesMatter.
In the Soundcloud description, Miguel writes:
"This version was started (written/recorded) here in London in my hotel room between the hours of 4am and around 7am when i passed out. ill update this song every week until its complete. Please feel free to share. #blacklivesmatter"
The artist pours out his heart over a psychedelic-sounding production, where he croons, “How many black lives, how many black lives? / How many heartbeats turned into flatlines? / How many black lives, how many black lives? / Does it take to wake the change?”
Other artists have displayed various forms of support following the police murders of black men Alton Sterling and Philando Castile—from Beyoncé's call to action to the Black Hippy Crew's politically-charged remix of Schoolboy Q's "THat Part."
