Rihanna already plays an alienesque character in Star Trey Beyond's "Sledgehammer" video, and the popstar will continue to explore an alternate universe in her upcoming role in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The sci-fi film, directed by Luc Besson, was previewed during San Diego's Comic-Con.

Valerian also stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as interstellar special agents. It finds Rihanna playing a space dancer at an alien bar/brothel run by Ethan Hawke. Vulture reports the singer rocks a retro-inspired look, complete with a bowler hat, short black hair and a sparkly mesh outfit. While the official Comic-Con footage isn't available online, you can see a behind-the-scenes look below:

Besson, who also directed The Fifth Element, Léon: The Professional and Lucy, teased Rihanna's role to Entertainment Weekly. “I think it’s the weirdest part in the film. Not weirdest, but most complicated. You really don’t expect it at all," he said.

DeHaan added, "Really, you guys don't even know. Rihanna's part is so crazy. It's so awesome. I worked with her the first two weeks of the shoot. And whenever I told anyone what I'd be doing for those first two weeks, their jaws were on the floor and they were so jealous."

Valerian, an adaptation of the French Valérian and Laureline comic series, will hit theaters July 21, 2017. Ahead of its release, check out our list of all the must-see movies for this summer and watch a flashback Fuse interview with Rihanna below:
