With “Closer,” Halsey and the Chainsmokers have simultaneously scored the biggest hit of their respective careers. Now, the duo and pop star have crashed the MTV VMAs for their debut performance of their No. 1 hit.

Taking over Madison Square Garden in New York, The Chainsmokers kicked off the performance with smoke billowing across the stage and tons of kids in the front mouthing along to the words. Halsey strutted onstage with flowing locks and a revealing top, and confetti flew as the trio ended the performance in the middle of the arena.

The performance arrives less than one week after “Closer” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, in its third week on the chart. The Chainsmokers previously reached the Top 10 with “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down.”
