Early on in his character’s development, Jeremy Renner revealed that he was “frustrated” with filming The Avengers

At a Q&A this weekend at London Film & Comic Con, Renner let his unhappy feelings be known about Hawkeye’s initial involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “In the first Avengers...I was just getting to know who Hawkeye was, and then zap, I go round like a zombie, I’m like Loki’s minion,” Renner said, as reported by RadioTimes. He describes how, at the time, he was frustrated “because I was so excited to figure out who Hawkeye was."

While filming, Renner admits that he attempted his own antics on set, suggesting to the filmmakers that they kill off Hawkeye. “I just had a heart attack in every scene—I’d just be walking with...Scarlett Johansson, and just like be ‘Ugh,’” Renner said.

After the filmmakers asked him what was happening, Renner explained, “I’m giving you an option, if you just want to kick me out of this movie. Just you know, at any given moment, if you wanna kill me off, daddy’s gonna be having a heart attack.”

As Hawkeye’s role continued to develop, Renner clarified that, “I don’t really want him to die now.” He commented, “I really got to explore him a lot, and I can’t wait to explore him more, and there’s some really cool ideas coming up.”
