We still have two years until the first Avatar sequel arrives in theaters, but James Cameron is sharing details of what we can expect. The director spoke to Variety about the follow-up to the 2009 movie and his plans for all the back-to-back release dates.

He says that Toruk, the current Cirque du Soleil Avatar prequel, has clues of what's to come for the new movies: “The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children. It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans. But thematically, ‘Toruk’ manages to land very very closely to the feeling of where the sequel stories are going.”

Cameron also stated that while the first sequel is meant to arrive in 2018, that date can change "if we need to." He tells Variety

“The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise.”

As of now, Avatar 2 will premiere in Dec. 2018, with the rest of the sequels dropping in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Original cast members Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver will all make a return. Ahead of its release, check out a roundup of the biggest box office film earnings from the past decade.
