Ben Affleck sinks deep into the mob world in the gritty Live by Night, his first directorial effort since 2012's Oscar-winning Argo. The teaser trailer above is set in the 1920s Prohibition era and shows the actor playing Joe Coughlin, the son of a Boston police captain who leaves New England to bootleg in Florida.

Soon after, he turns into one of the state's most notorious gangsters. “I realized, to be free in this life, breaking the rules meant nothing,” Affleck’s character says in the murderous and thrilling trailer. “You had to be strong enough to make your own.” Live by Night is based on Dennis Lehane's 2012 novel of the same name.

Affleck is also co-producing the film alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran (The Revenant) and Jennifer Todd (Memento). The all-star cast includes Chris Cooper, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller and Zoe Saldana.

Live by Night arrives in theaters on Jan. 13, 2017. Before that, Affleck will star in The Accountant (out Oct. 14.) and reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in Justice League (out Nov. 2017) and the next standalone Batman film.
