If you were craving a high school drama series now that Pretty Little Liars is on its way out, then Riverdale may be your answer. The CW released the first teaser for the upcoming show via EW, and it's a somber take on the classic Archie comics. We are introduced to Archie Andrews, who loves to show off his washboard abs way more than the dorky but womanizing character many grew up with.
The promo also reveals fashionista Betty Cooper (played by Lili Reinhart), who competes with rich girl and best friend Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) for Archie's affection. Throughout the show, the trio tries to deal with a murder-mystery during sophomore year of high school.
At San Diego Comic Con, executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed Riverdale won't resemble the lovable comics. He told EW:
“It’s definitely Archie, but a little darker, a little more complex and a little weirder than you might remember from the digest you bought at the supermarket. We’re saying it’s a little bit like Archie meets Twin Peaks.”
Shannon Purser, who plays Barb on Stranger Things, snagged the role of Ethel Muggs. Other cast members include Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) as Jughead, Mädchen Amick (Twin Peaks reboot) as Betty’s mother Alice, Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Luke Perry as Archie’s father Fred and Madelaine Petsch (The Curse of Sleeping Beauty) as Cheryl Blossom.
Look out for the premiere of Riverdale on Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. And in the meantime, listen to the Back of the Class podcast talk Stranger Things at the 32:30-mark below:
