Star Wars: Episode VIII revealed its title on Monday, and the sequel to 2015's The Force Awakens will officially be called...The Last Jedi. Ahhhhh!!
Due Dec. 15, 2017, this will be the second film with Jedi in the title, following 1983's Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. This makes a chronological sandwich of two films with Jedi in the name and one referencing the Jedi's mystical power (The Force Awakens) in between. It also balances out the light side/dark side titles, offsetting Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the holy grail, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
And what a bummer—the Jedi just returned...and now they're down to the last one again? Will Rey not become a Jedi? Will Luke die, leaving only her? Will they both live and the "last" part is just referencing the beginning? Please god just tell us the Jedi will proliferate again.
Something about the stark redness of the poster has us, again, hoping that this third trilogy's middle movie functions as ominously as Empire did:
The Last Jedi is also the title of a series of young adult Star Wars books by Jude Watson, launched in 2005 and totaling 10 novels by the 2008 conclusion. They took place between the first two trilogies.
Daisy Ridley has already teased, "It’s such a good story. Seriously. Luke is so cool in this one. Really.” Oscar Isaac was quoted as saying Rey, Finn and Poe "get tested immensely" and that this one is "the dark second chapter, but not really dark."
Now's a great time to flash back to the 33 things we absolutely expect from Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, and these exciting, still unproven fan Force Awakens theories. And why not take look at all eight titles so far (remember, Rogue One is a Star Wars Story, a.k.a. a non-trilogy, non-Skywalker story)?
