After making history as the first openly transgender actress with a regular part on a network TV series, Laverne Cox is officially one of the two leads for a new hourlong ABC comedy pilot called The Trustee. The Orange Is the New Black Emmy nominee will co-star with Meaghan Rath of New Girl, Banshee and Being Human.

Deadline says The Trustee is...

"...a fun, female buddy cop comedy about Eliza Radley (Rath), a driven but stubborn detective who finds unlikely help from her precinct’s trustee, Amanda Jones (Cox) a larger-than-life ex-con finishing out her prison sentence doing menial tasks for the police department."

Cox's history-making in February came via CBS' Katherine Heigl law series Doubt, which was pulled after a paltry two episodes. Last fall she played Dr. Frank-N-Furter on Fox's The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again.

The Trustee's pilot will be directed by Michael Engler (Sex and the City, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Big C) and written by Jay Scherick and David Ronn, who teamed on Spin City, the latest Smurfs movies and the upcoming Baywatch flick.
