Marvel's Deadpool is turning into an animated series on FXX, which is co-created by—get this—Donald Glover and Stephen Glover. It was previously announced the actor/singer would be making projects for FX, but we didn't know he planned to bring this much heat!
According to Variety, the show has been given a straight-to-series order and will feature 10 episodes in its first season. There is no confirmed titled as of now, but expect it to hit your television screen in 2018. The Glover brothers (Stephen is also a staff writer for Atlanta) are the showrunners, executive producers and writers of the animated show. So expect a lot of wit and culturally relevant references.
Back in January, FX Productions revealed they signed a deal with Donald Glover where he "will develop new projects for FX and other networks/streaming services." Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, who is also the show's executive producer, stated: “How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX—the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth. We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
At this year's Golden Globes, Atlanta won Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and Glover won Best Actor in a TV Comedy. The show won't return until next year, but the actor will play the young Lando Calrissian in Star Wars' upcoming Han Solo origin movie and has a not-yet-revealed role in Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming (out July 7). He also locked in the voice role of Simba in the live-action Lion King remake, which arrives July 19, 2019.
As for the sequel to Deadpool? That hits theaters on June 1, 2018. But before you get too overwhelmed by the Glover takeover, throw it back to this classic Bonnaroo conversation with Childish Gambino himself:
