Amon Tobin Blasts Off With Eye-Popping 3D Spectacle

Building upon its previous incarnation, ISAM 2.0 is the newly revamped audio-visual touring accompaniment for Amon Tobin's groundbreaking seventh full-length studio album, 'ISAM.' With a stage setup similar to a living 3D Tetris or Q*bert-like game, it's clear from the start that ISAM will deliver far beyond any traditional live experience.

With Tobin set inside a 25-by-14-by-8-foot central cube, the stage layout is massive. ISAM 2.0, which uses real-time projection mapping, generative imagery and audio-reactive elements is more than just a show…it's a mind-melting, eye-popping spectacle.

Easily compared to an art installation, Tobin wanted something that would allow the audience to visualize the music.

Originally a Brazilian native, Tobin now calls the Bay Area home. He is considered by many as one of the most influential electronic music artists in the world and has been described as a virtuoso sound designer.

Tobin's music falls into the electronic genre, but what differentiates the producer is that he creates the sounds himself, recording non-instrumental objects then digitally manipulating them into twisted, bass-filled sonic soundscapes.

In 2011, Tobin told Wired magazine that “the show isn’t about being a big flashy production ... it’s not giant walls of LEDs constantly flashing meaningless visual content at you until you puke. It’s completely unique and actually quite bizarre.”

Sound and visuals combined, experiencing ISAM in person is a sensation in itself, where machines come to life as if they're ready to take over the world.

For most of the show, Tobin was invisible, hidden among the ever-changing cubist landscape of spaceships and 3D animation. But the crowd was periodically reassured of his existence as a dim and eerie light lit up his command center-like cube, revealing the master at work.

To date, ISAM 2.0 has received overwhelming praise from fans and critics alike. That admiration has surprised even Tobin himself, who told Spinner that "everyone involved, myself included, is in it to push their own creative boundaries first and foremost, so to have it reach as far as it has is an unexpected bonus."

ISAM Live 2.0 is a fantastic visual journey that will push even the most timid fan to sensory overload. The tour wraps up mid-October in Los Angeles.
