Soundgarden Drop "Been Away Too Long" Video"

The 'King Animal' tour kicks off in January, but this strangely compelling video is already here
 / November 13, 2012

A young girl frees herself from a straightjacket, bashes a pile of animal bones and attempts to navigate a wintery, post-apocalyptic police state. Why? Who knows?! It doesn't need to make sense—it's a Soundgarden video!

This awesome clip (which you can watch above) accompanies "Been Away Too Long," Soundgarden's lead single from King Animal, their first album in 16 years. As apt as the song's title is, the Seattle grunge vets actually told us its double meaning wasn't intentional. "['Been Away Too Long'] doesn't sum up my feelings about reforming," frontman Chris Cornell told us earlier this week. "In fact, it doesn't have anything to do with that. But the title does fit metaphorically."

Regardless, "Been Away Too Long" rang true for fans when the band revealed they had a brand new album in the works earlier this year (which, btw, comes out this Tuesday). And as you might've guessed, with a new album comes a new tour—which means that for the first time since 1997, you can see Soundgarden touring behind fresh material

Check out their King Animal tour dates below, and to hear Cornell explain Soundgarden's enduring appeal past the "brief period of time when we were selling millions of records," check out our interview right here.
