Talib Kweli, Royce da 5'9" Honor Hip Hop Producer J Dilla in Detroit

Talib Kweli, Royce da 5'9", DJ Spinna, Beat Junkies' J. Rocc and House Shoes gathered together earlier this month for Dilla Day Detroit, an annual celebration honoring revered hip hop producer J Dilla, who passed away in 2006.

Dilla, whose production resume includes Busta Rhymes, Common, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and A Tribe Called Quest, always chose work over the spotlight, despite an increasing global fanbase.

"We’re here to celebrate the life and legacy of J Dilla, one of the greatest, most prolific producers of all time," Kweli says after the show. "I think it’s important for Detroit to recognize one of their own and one of their heroes and I think it’s important for hip hop that we have events like this on a large scale where we have understanding of the root of this."

Led by Dilla's mother Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey and Yancey Media Group CEO Jonathon Taylor, the Dilla Day organizers also set up Dilla Youth Day, a free, hands-on program allowing children to play instruments and learn from Detroit musicians.
