Kid Capri Recalls Spending $10,000 on One Record
Since 2010, legendary DJ/producer Kid Capri has been a judge on the reality show DJ competition Master of the Mix alongside producers Viktor Duplaix and Crate Diggers alum Just Blaze. But it's just the latest venture in a career going back more than 30 years.
A DJ since he was 8 years old, Capri first hit it big spinning late-night sets at venerated NYC club Studio 54. Original productions would follow, with Capri producing for everyone from Boogie Down Productions and Heavy D to Big L and Quincy Jones. Now, as founder of No Kid'n Records, Capri is discovering and promoting the next generation of rappers and producers.
Capri takes us inside his record collection, which include crates devoted to James Brown and Michael Jackson and countless 45s. He recalls the rare Brown record he once found in a garbage, and why spending $10,000 on one record is actually a wise investment.
Capri also shares a pro tip for beating out all the other producers who would flock to the record convention at New York's Roosevelt Hotel in the 1990s: Get a room the night before and buy all the records from vendors before the convention even opens. The more you know.
