Kanye West Defends Drake, Slams GRAMMYS, Apple CEO & More in Latest Rant
Kanye West's vow to stop ranting for six months has been cut four months short: The MC delivered a 20-minute, stream-of-consciousness tirade at his Newark Yeezus tour stop, likey brought on by a recent controversy between Drake and Rolling Stone.
For a quick recap, RS quoted Drizzy making light-hearted shots at his hip-hop peers, saying, "There were some real questionable bars on [Yeezus]" among digs at Jay Z and Macklemore. Drake claims to have never made the comments.
But instead of lashing out at Drizzy, Kanye blames Rolling Stone: "Let me tell you what it is about magazines: they always be trying to pit n***as against each other and that ain't going down anymore," he told the Jersey audience. "We love Drake. If anything, we are going to go after those motherf-ckers that write their negativity, because before they print sh-t like that, they need to check with me and him to see if it’s OK before they get ran up in their motherf-ckin office."
Got that, journalists? Make sure artists are 100% on board with whatever you're writing about them before it goes to print.
This segued into commentary about the media overall: "So, every media outlet, I don’t care who you are, don't play yourself. Respect as such." 'Ye added how the media must recognize him as a "genuine creator," naming Miles Davis, Lauryn Hill, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G. and Prince as fellow genuine creators.
The "Bound 2" rapper also had thoughts for Apple CEO Tim Cook ("Stop trying to get performers to play your festivals for free. You are rich as f-ck."), the GRAMMYs for his two nominations this year ("That's like giving the waiter a two dollar tip") and a not-so-subtle swipe at Macklemore's GRAMMY domination ("He made some good music, he's a good kid, but you all know what it is").
Ah, Kanye, good to have the real you back. Check out the full rant below.
