Sam Smith's "Stay With Me": Who Covered It Better, Charli XCX or FKA Twigs?
"Stay With Me" has been a stunner since the jump, back before everyone knew Sam Smith as the next huge voice out of the UK (and Katy Perry's favorite awards show companion). He's fast becoming your favorite pop star's favorite pop star, and two vocal powerhouses on the rise, Charli XCX and FKA twigs, have now tried the soaring notes of "Stay With Me" on for size.
FKA Twigs hit up the BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and Charli and band stopped by iHeartRadio for their respective cover jams. It's not a total shocker that "Stay With Me" would catch the attention of some big names, but these takes on the song are inventive, refreshing and hold their own to Smith's original recording.
First, we've got Miss Charli putting her own spin on "Stay With Me," complete with an all-girl backing band and a rockier edge.
Next up: FKA Twigs' surreal, slowed-down version of the romantic track, which re-imagines Smith's hit in pretty much every thinkable way, from the instrumentation to the lyrical structure.
And below, the original: here's Sam rocking "Stay With Me" (with a little help from his dear friend Mary J. Blige) at the Apollo Theater on the night of In The Lonely Hour's release.
What do you think, is Smith's "Stay With Me" your tried-and-true fave, or are you hooked on these new covers of the song? Take the poll below and let us know!
