Maddie Ziegler Gets Into Sia's Psyche in "Big Girls Cry" Video

The young dancer steps inside the anxiety-ridden singer's mind, giving a performance that's as much about facial expression as it is choreography

After Sia recruited tween dancer Maddie Ziegler for two mind-boggling interpretative dances in her "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart" videos, the singer-songwriter has tapped the Dance Moms star for one last visual. This time it's more about psychological exploration than cool choreography.

Rather than showing off a new galloping routine, "Big Girls Cry" focuses on closeups of Ziegler's facial expressions as the 12-year-old gives looks of insanity, paranoia, hysteria, sadness and every emotion in between. Maddie's hands do the talking as she slaps herself, pulls her ears and tousles her Sia wig. The most disturbing part of the video comes when a pair of hands trap her face, going on to hoist Ziegler into the air as her little legs flail to break free.

The stirring visual is likely another look into Sia's mind; an abstract representation of a singer whose anxiety and social phobias led her to alcoholism, prescription drug abuse and an aborted suicide attempt. All that led to Sia almost entirely vacating her videos and performances, instead letting the likes of Zigler, Lena Dunham and Kristen Wiig handle things.

Billboard reports that "Big Girls Cry" is the last of Sia's visual trilogy featuring Zielger. Will there be another theme for This Is Acting, her upcoming album?
