Watch Nicki Minaj Recite Maya Angelou's Timeless 'Still I Rise' Poem

"You may shoot me with your words / You may cut me with your eyes / You may kill me with your hatefulness / But still, like air, I'll rise"

One of the most forward-thinking women in music, Nicki Minaj, recited one of the most empowering poems of the 20th century on Wednesday night (Nov. 18), as Nicki Minaj grabbed hold of Maya Angelou's 1978 poem, "Still I Rise."

The recitation took place at Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. In a gold-and-black outfit, Minaj delivered Angelou's legendary words with a care and thoughtfulness that she gives to each of her musical verses, and playfully put her hand on her hip at the end of the recitation.

Artists like John LegendAlicia KeysEd Sheeran and Miguel also took part in the Shining a Light event, which helped raise money for the nonprofit United Way Worldwide. The concert will air as a three-hour special on A&E on Friday night.
