#TBT: Alicia Keys Reflects on Impact of 'Empire State of Mind'

"That idea of you can come from nothing and become something just resonates with people," she told Fuse in a 2010 interview

After dropping in late 2009, Jay Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" quickly topped charts worldwide and was deemed "the new New York anthem." Speaking to Fuse in 2010, Keys seemed pleasantly surprised by the single's enormous success.

"You never exactly know what's gonna happen with music...So it's always a bit of a surprise when the world gets it." the singer-songwriter explained.

And as for why the world "gets" a song singularly about New York?

"People really understand the feeling of wanting to make your dreams come—that idea of you can come from nothing and become something just resonates with people."
