Watch Against Me!'s Tom Gabel Play First Show As Laura Jane Grace
On May 8, Tom Gabel, frontman for Florida aggro-punk band Against Me!, revealed plans to begin the process of becoming a woman via hormones and electrolysis treatments. Over the weekend, the band performed their first show since the announcement, opening for the Cult in San Diego's Humphreys Concerts by the Bay.
Now performing as Laura Jane Grace, Gabel didn't mention his transgender plans to the crowd, though as Spin noted, "the crowd cheered when she sang, 'If I could have chosen/I would have been born a woman,' lines from 'The Ocean,' a song from the 2007 album New Wave." "I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something," Grace told Rolling Stone after the show.
Rolling Stone also reports that Grace is two weeks into hormone replacement therapy, which, contrary to fears from the band, had no impact on the group's set. Check out video of Grace's performance above.
