Justin Bieber Grows Up in "Boyfriend" Video

It can't be coincidence that Director X's last project before Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" was Drake's "H.Y.F.R.," the video where the half-Jewish rapper has a grown-up Bar Mitzvah with DJ Khaled and Lil Wayne, among others. "Boyfriend" could be X's sequel, as Bieber sheds the last remnants of bubblegum-pop and graduates into Timberlakian territory.

Filmed in Los Angeles in late March, Bieber's girlfriend Selena Gomez was present, presumably to ensure Bieber didn't try to become too much of a man with any of the extras.

"It was just cars and the simplicity that they liked. Cars, girls, just young people hanging out, having fun, that kind of thing. When I heard it, I thought that's what it should be," Director X told MTV News. "From what they wanted to do with Justin and the song and who he is and his age now, I thought that was it. They should expect the Justin they know, just a little more grown-up."

This is where I would normally provide some more deep, trenchant insight but yeah, no, X pretty much nailed it. Cars. Girls. Black leather jackets. A possible Selena Gomez look-a-like. Check it out.
