You Need to Know: Electro-House Producer Porter Robinson
Every Tuesday, You Need to Know spotlights a rising artist that we know will blow up big. Listen now. Thank us later. This week: Electro-house DJ/producer Porter Robinson.
In October 2010, Deadmau5's Mau5trap label released an EP by a popular, yet not ubiquitous, DJ named Skrillex entitled Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. We all know how that turned out. Skrillex has since paid it forward, establishing his OWSLA label and signing 19-year-old North Carolina DJ/producer Porter Robinson, who King Skrillex has dubbed "one of the most incredible songwriters in EDM."
Robinson's debut EP Spitfire quickly reached No. 1 on influential dance music chart Beatport, but it's all about the live show, right? The Chapel Hill musician already has a cross-country tour with Tiësto on his résumé, and will be touring Identity Festival this summer alongside Paul Van Dyk, Nero and Madeon.
I'm digging the aggro dubstep of "Say My Name," but gravitate more toward "Unison" below, which draws equally from house and techno, and counterbalances squelchy synths with warm vibes and a classic house synth loop. Check it out below and catch Robinson when he rolls through your city.
