Bruce Springsteen Plays "We Shall Overcome" at Surprise Norway Appearance
A somber Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt surprised a Norweigan crowd in Oslo's City Square on Sunday night to help honor and remember the 69 victims of last summer's tragic shooting at a youth camp on Utoya Island. "For all of us who love democracy and tolerance, it's an international tragedy," Springsteen told the crowd of 60,000.
As you can watch in the video above, the pair played a tender rendition of "We Shall Overcome" as "a prayer for a peaceful future for Norway," dedicating the anthem to families who lost loved ones on July 22, 2011. Bruce kept it restrained and really appeared to ache as he invoked a violence-free future. The performance concluded a day of memorial concerts, church ceremonies, and wreath-layings.
