Wilco's sound is often referred to as Dad Rock. Ryan Adams, now just two years shy of 40 himself, could probably slide into that genre as well. Norah Jones is definitely Mom Rock, and Fiona Apple could probably be, like, the hip hash-smoking mom on the fringe of that knitting circle. Which is why their music is the ideal fit for the soundtrack to Judd Apatow's new film, This Is 40, featuring brand spanking new tracks from those artists and more. It drops December 11, which is definitely some rock fan's 40th birthday.

Jon Brion, Apple's oft-collaborator, contributes new music and also produced all new tracks on the soundtrack, including tunes from Graham Parker and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham. The Punch Brothers appear as the backing band on several tracks, too. Other previously released songs from Paul Simon, Loudon Wainwright, Yoko Ono and the Avett Brothers are also included.

As for the film, you may recall the two main characters, played by Paul Rudd and Apatow's wife Leslie Mann, from their roles in Apatow's Knocked Up. Here's the plot, per a statement...

"Five years after Apatow introduced us to Pete and Debbie in Knocked Up, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as a husband and wife both approaching a milestone meltdown in This Is 40, an unfiltered, comedic look inside the life of an American family.  In his fourth directorial outing, Apatow’s new comedy captures what it takes for them to flourish in the middle of a lifetime together."

The cast also includes John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks.
