Baroness' Drummer & Bassist Leave Band Following "Brush With Death"
Following last year's tour bus crash in the UK, two members of Baroness have left the Georgia metal outfit to focus on their recovery. "Nothing can truly prepare you for a brush with death," the band wrote in a website post. "Simply put, some of the effects and injuries were severe enough to prohibit further activity in Baroness."
While all four members survived the harrowing 30-foot bus drop, the band revealed, "We are recovering at different rates" and "the accident necessitated a change that would prevent [drummer Allen Blickle & bassist Matt Maggioni] from performing music or touring." While guitarists John Baizley and Pete Adams were injured in the crash (Baizley broke his arm), Blickle and Maggioni suffered fractured vertebrae.
"The details of their departure are not sensational; they do not come with hard feelings," Baroness said. "Nor are the details going to be public; suffice it to say we’d like to keep to ourselves the finer points of this situation, to respect the privacy of all involved."
The post ends on a hopeful note, explaining that Baroness have already found two new musicians to fill in for their departing bandmates. It's uncertain if the newbies, who remain unnamed at press time, will join as full-fledged members or just touring replacements. Either way, Baizley said the two newcomers have the "passion and vitality and help get us back out on tour to finish what was seemingly cut short last August." Because according to him, "I am personally staking my recovery on this principle."
