MGMT have a new album on the way, and now fans can hear those tracks live. The Brooklyn-based duo just announced an 18-date spring tour, set to kick off April 26 in University Park, PA. From there, Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden will hit select North American cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Cleveland, Providence, Seattle and Portland. See the full itinerary below.
As previously reported, MGMT's followup to Congratulations is a weird, synth-heavy LP inspired by Aphex Twin and house music. After recording their last album with a full band, MGMT hit producer Dave Fridmann's Tarbox Road Studios in upstate New York as just a duo, recording in the same style as their breakout debut, Oracular Spectacular.
Goldwasser said that MGMT are "not trying to make music that everyone understands the first time they hear it... There's no illusion on [Columbia Records'] part that that we're going to turn into a Top 40 band."
Song titles include "Mystery Disease" and "Alien Days," which VanWyngarden explains is "about that feeling when a parasitic alien is in your head, controlling things." There's also a cover of "Introspection" by the 1960s garage rockers Faine Jade. "The recording process was really strange," Fridmann said. "So we did a cover just to say, 'Let's get back to planet Earth for a second.'"
