The Joy Formidable on Moving Forward After Dating Band Members Broke Up

In 1994, No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kanal ended their romantic relationship which acted as inspiration for their breakout No. 1 album Tragic Kingdom. Nearly two decades later and another female-led rock act, Welsh trio The Joy Formidable, are dealing with a similar challenge.

Singer/guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd ended their seven-year relationship before releasing their sophomore album, Wolf, in January 2013.

"It's actually not strange at all," Dafydd tells Fuse of their post-breakup relationship in the band. "The core of our relationship has always been about the music. This band has always been about the music. We were together for seven years and now we're not."

The fact it has not caused awkward in-band tension is remarkable. "It's not weird, it's actually pretty amazing. We think, 'Wow, this is a really special dynamic.' It's all about being creative and being proud of what we're creating. We're solid!"
