Started in 1992, the Mercury Prize is a prestigious award issued each year to the best British album, as decided by a panel of British music critics and industry types. And many, many more big names have been nominated.

The shortlist for this year's award have been unveiled; there's returning favorite Arctic Monkeys and veteran David Bowie, plus other indie acts like R&B experimentalist James Blake, EDM duo Disclosure, girl-punk outfit Savages and soul songstress Laura Mvula.
