Flaming Lips (Finally) Cover the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"
While rehearsing for their all-Beatles songs New Year's Eve concert in Aspen, Colorado, the Flaming Lips decided to bang out a studio version of one of those covers. And it's a song that's shocking to think Wayne Coyne & Co. haven't put on wax before: The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
Given the Lips' status as the 21st century's most-popular purveyors of psychedelica and their unabashed classic rock fandom (they covered the entire Dark Side of the Moon album, for chrissake), this straightforward cover fits them like a hemp glove.
While it's more listenable than Elton John's limp 1974 version of the Sgt. Pepper's classic, it doesn't hold a candle to William Shatner's batsh-t crazy, brilliantly bonkers cover of the tune from 1968. Listen to the Lips version above and marvel at Captain Kirk's take on "Lucy" below.
