Is Clay Aiken Heading to Congress?
Clay Aiken: Beloved American Idol contestant; Burgeoning musical theater starlet; Unexpectedly awesome guest star on The Office; Congressman?
According to a report from the Washington Blade, the openly-gay Democrat is "actively considering" a run for a seat in North Carolina's second congressional district. The seat is currently held by Republican Renee Ellmers, who is vying for reelection.
And the Raleigh native appears quite serious about his transition to politics a la Sonny Bono. Aiken has allegedly spoke with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and sought the help of political strategist Betsy Conti, who has worked with Al Gore and former North Carolina Governor Bev Purdue. Connections, baby!
The report adds that should the "Invisible" singer decide to run, he'll face competition in the primary from North Carolina's former Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco.
Neither Aiken nor the DCCC has responded to the story. The filing deadline to participate is February 28, so it shouldn't be too long until we hear one way or the other.
