Pretty Lights is Trying to "Revitalize" Hip Hop

Pretty Lights, aka Derek Vincent Smith, is pushing the genre envelope more than ever these days.

The EDM wizard, who already has a Rock the Bells touring gig alongside the Wu Tang Clan under his belt, had lots to say about hip hop on the GRAMMYs Red Carpet.

After telling Fuse News' Jack Osbourne that he was working with "a lot of rappers pretty much everyone knows," he spoke about lending his electronic touch to the genre.

"I'm putting my music into the hip hop game and doing my part trying to revitalize that genre.

"You know, just breathe some new life into it. Some hot sh-t is in the works no doubt."

But as far as his current genre—EDM—Pretty Lights, who will be hitting up the CounterPoint festival in Atlanta this spring, says he is honored to be a GRAMMY nominee for Best Dance/Electronica album.

"The fact that there was a paradigm shift that allowed an independent musician such as myself to get recognized for an album I put a massive amount of work into was cool.

"So, thanks!"
