All Is By My Side struggled through a difficult production period—Hendrix's estate denied the filmmakers permission to use any of Jimi's original songs—and it met with mixed responses at the Toronto International Film Fest. But with its U.S. premiere on the horizon, Andre 3000 is finally speaking up about the movie.
"It was a trip. It was a ride," the OutKast rapper said. "The first thing I did was not look at him like an icon, 'cause when you're in it, you don’t know you're an icon until other people say you're an icon. I had to take it as a person. I thought, 'Well, what would Jimi want people to know that they can't get on YouTube.'
"I’m actually excited to see it," Andre 3000 said. "I can't talk a lot about it because I don't want to give a lot of it away, but i think you’ll all be pleased."
All Is By My Side, which is directed by 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley, will debut during the film portion of SXSW 2014, which runs from March 7-15. Fingers crossed the reunited OutKast add SXSW to the growing list of festivals they're playing this spring/summer.
