Metallica Releasing 9-Minute Ronnie James Dio Medley on Cancer Charity Comp
Metallica's long-rumored/lusted-after tribute medley to the late Ronnie James Dio will finally see the light of day. This Is Your Life, a cancer charity compilation featuring metal bands covering his songs, comes out on April 1 (although goddammit, this better not be an April Fools' joke from Rhino Records).
The Antarctic sojourners will unleash a nine-minute mashup of four Rainbow tracks called "Ronnie Rising Medley." Three of the songs are from Rainbow's genre-changing Rising album—"Tarot Woman," "Stargazer" and "A Light In the Black"—while the fourth track is "Kill the King," a staple of Rainbow's live repertoire.
Metallica's Ronnie James Dio covers medley is part of This Is Your Life, a charity compilation featuring previously unreleased RJD covers from Motorhead, Anthrax, Corey Taylor and even Jack Black's comedy rock duo Tenacious D. The D are tackling "The Last in Line" from Dio's second album, Anthrax are recording the Dio-helmed Black Sabbath classic "Neon Knights" and Motorhead are handling Rainbow's "Starstruck." Slipknot/Stone Sour's Corey Taylor has the unenviable task of reinterpreting the inimitable "Rainbow in the Dark" from Dio's Holy Diver. So, you know, good luck with that.
Proceeds from This Is Your Life will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. The legendary metal singer-songwriter died of stomach cancer in 2010.
