Demi Lovato On Living With & Medicating Her Bipolar Disorder

Demi Lovato is Cosmopolitan For Latinascurrent cover girl and newly crowned "Fun, Fearless Latina of the Year." And the former X Factor judge divulged more than just career aspirations in the corresponding interview.

Demi's always kept it real about the struggles she's overcome, be it her eating disorder, drug addiction or cutting. Now she's opened up about living with bipolar disorder to Cosmo.

“[Bipolar] is a daily thing," she said. "I treat it with medication. Not everybody does that, but for me it works. That’s what works for me—medicating, checking in with people, being honest and being grateful for things.”

As for the drugs and the partying, a charity trip to Kenya on her birthday last year seriously shifted her perspective. “I was used
to drinking and doing drugs on my birthday,” she said. “I always imagined my 21st being a huge party where I’d get sh-t-faced and go crazy. But I realized that there’s so much more to life than that. Imagine walking 10 miles a day just to get water for your family? We have so much to be grateful for.”

Demi's sitting pretty career-wise—she's touring internationally behind 2013's Demi at the moment—but that doesn't mean she's content with what she has.

“I’m very proud of how far I’ve come, but I definitely want to win a GRAMMY one day, and I dream of winning an Oscar. I want to continue to tour and build my fan base and make music that will last for decades.”
