It's hard to portray an icon, because people are going to criticize whoever fills the role—regardless of talent or relation to the deceased. Disney Channel actress/aspiring singer Zendaya Coleman will play Aaliyah in an upcoming Lifetime biopic and people are maaaaad.
"I can't please everybody, can’t make everyone happy," Coleman told the Associated Press. "But what I can do is work really hard and just continue to show her legacy. That’s all I’m focused on is really, really portraying her in the best light possible. That’s all it’s about."
She seems to be taking the criticism with a grain of salt, though.
I'm just a 17 year old girl who got cast to play one of her biggest inspirations #positive— Zendaya (@Zendaya) June 17, 2014
