UPDATE (8/25): About 24 hours after opening the VMA with a slight wardrobe malfuction, the diva trio revealed the video for their "Bang Bang" collaboration. Check out all the colorful, trendy summer fashion (paired with vintage cars) as Jessie, Ari and Nicki shimmy down in a slew of skin-baring outfits. Visually, the video reminds us a bit of Christina Aguilera and Lil' Kim's female-empowerment anthem "Can't Hold Us Down" from 2003, an appropriate comparison given the tons of girl power in this visual. Watch above.
Original Story (7/28): Did someone say diva? Jessie J has unleashed her latest collaboration and girl, it is divalicious. The Brit recruited Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj for "Bang Bang" and you can listen to the gospel-inspired track in full below.
Similar to recent Pharrell smashes like "Happy" and "Blurred Lines," there's a distinct throwback sound with the track's funky bass line, energetic hand claps and banging drums. Jessie wails on the first verse while Mariah Carey disciple Grande hits just as hard on the second. Nicki jumps on the bridge for a rapid-fire rap section, referring to herself as "Queen Nicki."
The most striking—and catchy—part of the song is the gospel choir singing with the girls on the chorus. Sam Smith recruited a chorus for his lovelorn "Stay With Me" ballad and it's fun to now hear the gospel sound on an uptempo banger.
"Bang Bang" is the single that could bring Jessie back under the stateside spotlight. Her sophomore album Wild failed to produce any charting singles in America, and the record still hasn't been released in the USA. Last time we saw the Brit on the Billboard charts was in 2011 with her Katy Perry-esque jam "Domino."
You can listen to the full divalicious, gospel-inspired collaboration above. Is it making a late bid for a 2014 summer anthem?
