After Mary J. Blige jumped on epic reworks of singles by Disclosure ("F for You") and Sam Smith ("Stay With Me"), it's only appropriate the guys repay the R&B queen by helping out on her new song. That comes in the form of "Right Now," the first single from the diva's new album The London Sessions. The track finds the singer moving to a house/electronic sound, but keeping her signature empowering lyrics.
Listen above as MJB brings her emotional growls over Disclosure's throbbing synths and knocking percussion. Mary proves she's still the queen of perfect breakup anthems, declaring: "I'm telling you right now, I'm telling you right now / No, I won't play this game with you."
Sam Smith, also known for his poignant and heartbreaking lyrics, helped co-write the track.
As mentioned, "Right Now" is the first offering from MJB's upcoming thirteenth (!) album The London Sessions. The set, recorded in England, is said to include collaborations from British stars like Emeli Sande and Naughty Boy. Mary spoke to The Guardian about the record saying, "The music is free over here the way it used to be in the States. Artists are just free to do what they love. Listening to the radio you can hear the freedom. The music is living and breathing – you can hear that from Adele's last album."
An Adele-esque album with house producers led by this slick single? So far, sounds very good.
