UPDATE (10/14): T Swizzle's latest and greatest is here! The pop superstar shared "Out of the Woods" late last night. The tune was co-written by fun.'s Jack Antonoff. He told Billboard, "When I was working on the track, I was thinking a lot about My Morning Jacket and how everything they do, every sound is louder than the last, and somehow it feels like everything is just f-cking massive.” The song lives up to it, operating in a synth-pop realm somewhere between Charli XCX and M83. Get ready to dance! Press play below.
The singer also shared her most intimate thoughts on the Harry Styles-inspired tune. "This song is about the fragility and kind of breakable nature of some relationships," she explained. "It's a relationship where you never feel like you’re standing on solid ground. That kind of a feeling brings on excitement but also extreme anxiety and kind of a frantic feeling of wondering. Endless questions! This song sounds exactly like that frantic feeling of anxiety and questioning, but it stresses that even if a relationship is breakable and fragile and full of anxiety it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worthwhile, exciting, beautiful, all the things that we look for." Stay tuned for the full single tomorrow.
Original Story: This summer Taylor Swift announced 1989, her fifth studio album and first official foray into pop music (no banjos here, sorry guys). She shared feel-good anthem "Shake It Off" and now she's gearing up for its next buzz track "Out of the Woods," written with fun./Bleachers member Jack Antonoff. Taylor says it's the "song that I think best represents 1989" and Antonoff called it "one of the most important things I've ever been a part of." This song's going to be huge and it comes with an intriguing back story.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, "Out of the Woods" was all but confirmed to be about Swift's whirlwind romance with Harry Styles. Turns out the pairing was far from a Hollywood fairy tale. "Every day was a struggle," she says of her relationship with the One Direction lad. "Forget making plans for life—we were just trying to make it to next week."
The mag notes that the most interesting part of the song is the following lyric: "Remember when you hit the brakes too soon / Twenty stitches in a hospital room." How did two of the biggest stars in the planet wind up in the ER together and nobody knew about it?!
Taylor recognized how crazy this might sound and told RS, "You know what I've found works even better than a NDA? Looking someone in the eye and saying, 'Please don't tell anyone about this.'"
There's hope for humanity yet.
"Out of the Woods" drops on October 14.
