Kanye West Gives Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat" a Minimalist Makeover

Lorde's latest track is now a mini dark, twisted fantasy—or at least that's what it sounds like now that Kanye West has gotten his hands on it.

"Yellow Flicker Beat" is Lorde's contribution to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, which she also curated. The soundtrack not only boasts the striking single but a stripped-down re-working of "Yellow Flicker Beat" courtesy of Mr. West, who removed the majority of the song's percussion in favor of focusing on a lush orchestration of various vocals.

The danceable beat may be gone, but Kanye kept the drama of the track intact, showing that less really is more when you've got a voice like Lorde's involved. The Kanye re-work invokes an Enya-like quality (in a good way!) that matches the somber mood of The Hunger Games perfectly, and it'll be thrilling to see which version gets worked into the scenes of the film itself. (Who knows? Maybe there's a need for "Yellow Flicker Beat" in every kind of its intensity and we'll get to see them both played out on the big screen.)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 hits theaters November 21, and the soundtrack for the film will see its release November 17.
