Earlier this year Lil Wayne toured with Drake, and the two treated each night like a friendly competition. At the stop in his native New Orleans, Weezy gave his hometown crowd an extra treat—he announced that his upcoming album Tha Carter V would drop May 5. That proved to be a lofty goal, and the album has been pushed back multiple times. Eventually Lil Wayne was forced to admit that the project was on "indefinite hiatus," and would arrive as a two-part album, the first of which was finally given a release date: December 9.
Back in October, Wayne shared "Gotti," his first single from the album, featuring veteran hip hop outfit The Lox. Yesterday, at the 2014 American Music Awards, Weezy gave us another surprise, premiering "Start a Fire," which features Christina Milian.
The track begins with a somber, muted guitar riff. It doesn't seem to grow in volume until Wayne steps in, introducing the song with "Mama, I'm in love with a hot girl / And they just don't get it." That lays the foundation for the rest of the song, Weezy defending his lustful lover and outlining their hot and heavy relationship.
Christina Milian sings the chorus, "Let's start a fire / You be my lighter / Baby I'll be your gasoline," and "Let's start a fire / Watch the entire / World as it opens up in flames." It's the perfect tune for those into fiery and flirty love anthems but prefer Kanye to Taylor.
