In 2011, Nicki Minaj shocked radio listeners when she teamed up with David Guetta for "Turn Me On," a thumping EDM jam that showcased her singing skills for the first time. Today, the duo got back together for "Hey Mama," and while it doesn't have the shock factor of "Turn Me On," it's still a banging new track.
With Afrojack co-producing, the French DJ works up a striking production that mixes gospel choruses, trap snares and a Caribbean vibe. Nicki picks up on the tropical feeling and lets her Trinidadian roots come out while delivering her verses with a reggae-inflected accented.
While Nicki's lyrics are somewhat questionable ("Yes, I do the cooking / Yes, I do the cleaning / Yes, you be the boss / And yes, I be respecting / Whatever that you tell me 'cause it’s game you be spitting"), we're going to chalk this up to the Pinkprint star playing a character and the powerful MC not suddenly going all submissive on us.
And while she's uncredited, reports indicate that's "Take Me Home" singer Bebe Rexha handling that infectious chorus. Who would have thought the Brooklyn singer-songwriter could pull of the reggae sound?
"Hey Mama" is the latest cut from Guetta's upcoming Listen album, due November 24. We may not be getting Nicki's Pinkprint that day, but at least we get this blazing single!
