How does Jared Leto follow up an Oscar-winning role? By playing one of the world's most beloved, wretched villains.

Warner Bros. confirmed the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman has signed on to play the Joker in an upcoming flick Suicide Squad. The blockbuster is centered around the team of DC Comics supervillains who corroborated with the government to undertake high-risk, covert missions in exchange for pardoned prison time—a.k.a. the franchise that explains how the bad guys always got out of jail somehow.

The studio also announced that the movie, coming in 2D and 3D, stars Will Smith (though his role is still unconfirmed) along with Cara Delevingne playing Green Lantern enemy Enchantress and Jai Courtney playing Spiderman nemesis Boomerang.

After Heath Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for portraying the Joker in The Dark Knight, the villain has come to be a deep, respected character in modern society and inevitably returns every Halloween (hi, Miguel!). Is Leto eyeing another Oscar?

Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch; Fury), Suicide Squad is set to be released on August 5, 2016 and we can't wait. No, we really can't...any chance we can move this ahead of every other superhero movie coming before then?
