UPDATE (1/26/15): A new Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney song has landed on Earth, people. It's called "FourFiveSeconds"—a kinda head-scratching title for a kinda head-scratcher of an anthem. Listen here, and scope the details below:
If you're ready to own "FourFiveSeconds" forever and ever, head to iTunes, where the song has already climbed to no. 3 on the Songs Chart as of Monday morning.
A representative for Rihanna tells Rolling Stone that the track will be a single on both Rih and Kanye's new albums. The vocals are a duet between Rihanna ("I think I've had enough / I might get a little drunk / I say what's on my mind / I might do a little time") and Kanye ("Woke up an optimist / Sun was shinin', I'm positive / Then I heard you was talkin' trash / Hold me back, I'm 'bout to spaz"), while the instrumental base (acoustic guitar, an epic organ) comes from McCartney. As with Kanye and McCartney's recent tune "Only One," the former Beatle doesn't sing at all.
Rihanna's reaction to the song going live was priceless—should we take it as a hint that "FourFiveSeconds" is the lead single from her new album, the first since 2012's Unapologetic?
Original Story: On January 22 in L.A., Kanye West made a surprise appearance at the iHeartMedia Music Summit. He gave a 45-minute talk and threw out a few more Classic Yeezy Quotes—but the biggest moment came at the end, when Kanye previewed an upcoming Rihanna collaboration on his laptop. Billboard reports that the new song features "acoustic guitar and a big, soaring chorus and melody with a massive hook." When the track finished, Kanye "slammed his laptop shut and walked offstage to a standing ovation."
When Kanye's lovely Paul McCartney collaboration "Only One" debuted at New Year's, Ty Dolla $ign popped up to hype the Rihanna collaboration—which he said also features Sir Paul. "Me, Rihanna, 'Ye and Paul [Mc Cartney] got a song about to drop as well," the rapper told Billboard. "It's gonna drop soon. I heard they shot the video recently. I don't know what the final title is, but I know it's crazy, so just be looking out for [it]." Kanye and Rihanna teamed up in 2010 for "All of the Lights," one of the biggest smashes from the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album.
During his appearance on Thursday, Kanye also sang two bits of impromptu a cappella—the Yeezus track "Black Skinhead" and "Only One"—and said he jokingly asked Paul McCartney, "What was pussy like in the '60s?" Raise your hand if that comes as a shock.
Kanye's seventh solo album has been anticipated pretty much since the minute Yeezus dropped. In July 2014, 'Ye reportedly previewed 20 new songs in a London club. Later that same month, Kanye told GQ the new record could come in September. (So…false.) When September rolled around, Kanye spun a finished album three times in a row...for 20 people, in a dark room in Paris.
Please, Yeezus, please let us hear this thing soon. At least the Rihanna song. And/or anything else you've done with any and all Beatles.
