Let’s talk about age for a second. More specifically, the big 3-0. For most people, the imminent prospect of turning 30 is a terrifying thing, ridden with physical changes, career deadlines and personal goals.
As I creep dangerously close to my fourth decade of life, I often hear the phrase “I’m too old for that sh*t” from my 30-year-old friends, and rightly so. Our bodies can’t rebound from the excessive amounts of alcohol and drugs like they used to. Parts of us ache and break for no apparent reason other than the fact that we are literally deteriorating at a faster pace now.
At the ripe age of 30, a lot more is expected of a mature woman than a bright-eyed 20-something—but this is 2015, man! Thirty is a free pass for not giving a f*ck. “I’m too old for that sh*t” also means “I’m too old to care what someone else thinks.” So when someone tells me I shouldn’t wear overalls anymore or that I need to give my short dresses to Goodwill, I say, “I don’t give a f*ck what you think” and pull on my fur coat. Moreover, when someone writes an article listing the many things I can no longer wear when I turn 30 in a few months, I'm inclined to put up a fight by enlisting some opinions.
And what makes someone too old to do something? Health? Motherhood? Career?
Today, women in their 30s are hot, hard-working single gals who deserve to wear whatever they want. In 1970, the average woman was having her first baby at 21. Now, according to the CDC, the typical age has raised much higher, reflecting more first-time mothers who are older than 35. So you’re talking about a lot of 30-year-olds who are single and childless, too. So why not rock a mini-skirt if the occasion calls for it?
We decided to compile a few of the looks that were previously deemed “shouldn’t” and we’re saying you should. If you’ve got style, we think a lot of these looks aren’t trashy or too “young” looking. Click through and tell us what you think.
