It's been a hell of a long time since we've heard an all-out (non–Bowie, non–Rio 2) new song from android empress Janelle Monáe. And since some of the best songs on the perfect 2013 album The Electric Lady were at least semi-instructional ("Dance Apocalyptic," "Q.U.E.E.N."), it only makes sense that "Yoga" feels like the hottest, healthiest class, one that one Moneezy could teach.
And it's got an early contender for our annual Best Lyrics list: "You cannot police me, so get off my areola / Get off my areola." The woman behind "Cold War" and "Ghetto Woman" just went there again.
The track also gets an assist from Jidenna, one of a handful of sharp up-and-comers under Monáe's wing. Appearing on "Yoga" seems like a guarantee she'll end up on the upcoming Eephus, which Stereogum says will be "a new compilation album that will highlight the talents of Monáe’s Wondaland Arts Society crew." At Bonnaroo in 2014, Monáe told Fuse that Eephus was "a big concept" that would "just land" without notice.
And congratulations, yoga: You finally made it! This is your year; max exposure time. Soft eyes on this journey. Namastáe.
