Born Daniel Dumile in 1971, MF DOOM's first taste of fame came when he was a member of KMD, a Long Island, NY-based hip hop trio. Using the name Zev Love X, Dumile was joined in the group by his younger brother, Dingilizwe Dumile, a.k.a., DJ Subroc, and an emcee who went under the name Onyx the Birthstone Kid. The trio's second album, Black Bastards, was deemed too controversial by the suits at Elektra Records and released the group from their contract in 1993. That same year, Subroc was killed after being struck by a car. KMD broke up soon after.
