While millions discovered Cassadee Pope as the country powerhouse who won Season 3 of The Voice, the Florida native had a pre-reality show career as lead singer of buzzy pop-punk band Hey Monday. For her new single "I Am Invincible," the 25-year-old finds a nice balance of her two musical worlds for an impressive, empowering anthem.
Pope's latest tune features the banjos we heard in past singles like "Wasting All These Tears" and "I Wish I Could Break Your Heart," but it's also got the racing edge and anthemic feel of recent Fall Out Boy and Paramore hits.
Pope talked to Rolling Stone Country about how she mixes the two genres, saying:
"[My rock and punk influences] are a huge part of who I am. I grew up singing country music, that's a huge part of who I am, too, but I've always had that rock edge. And I don't want to ever neglect that, because it wouldn't be authentic to me."
In fact, Pope couldn't contain herself when she attended a recent FOB show:
"That kind of music still has a special place in my heart. I felt like I was a kid again. I still enjoy that kind of music, and that will never change. But it's a different story doing it. I'm in a different mind frame now than when I was at 18 years old. I was definitely more dramatic, definitely more emo."
"I Am Invincible" leads off Cassadee's sophomore album, due in 2016, that's said to explore the blending of punk, pop, rock and country. Consider Cassadee this year's most interesting crossover effort to watch.
