Last month we shared "Cardinals," the latest single from the Wonder Years' upcoming album, No Closer to Heaven. We caught up with the guys at the 2015 Alternative Press Music Awards red carpet to talk about their new sound, and how they believe this record is the best thing they've ever done.

You have a new album coming out. The single and video "Cardinals" are great.

Dan Campbell, singer: Thanks! We read the treatment for the video and fell in love with it immediately. The new record is called No Closer to Heaven. It comes out September 4th of this year. We say this with full honesty and earnestness, if we didn't think the record we were making is the best one we've ever made, we wouldn't make it. We're just not interested in putting out sub-par work. We can say down to every cell in us that we're incredibly proud of this record. It's our best work to date. We can't wait for everyone to hear it.

How does it differ from what you've done before? What makes it the thing you're most proud of?

It's a consistent expansion for us. We want to walk a line where every record we're doing we're taking one nice step forward but we're not taking a giant leap. We're not leaving everyone in the dust. It retains what makes us, us. We're not making the same record again. We want to make something new. We just tried to push out in every direction. It's a little bit softer, it's a little bit louder, it's a little bit faster, it's a little bit slower. It moves out every way. It's meant to expand the understanding of what our band is. You can call us pop-punk, you can call us emo, whatever it is that you want to call us, we want to expand your perception of that.
