Justin Bieber took the music world by the throat this week thanks to his first new solo single since his 2013 Journals series, “What Do You Mean?” It's the first song we've heard from his upcoming album. And lo and behold, his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night was no different.
The Biebs had some tough acts to follow. Nicki Minaj, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the Weeknd, Demi Lovato and Iggy Azalea all took the stage before Justin, but the much-maligned pop star held his own with the bubbly, synthetic flute-laced tune "What Do You Mean?" But that feat of upbeat balladry—complete with wire-aided somersaults—came after "Where Are Ü Now," where the 21-year-old popped out in an all-black ensemble with dancers in all-white, giving the catwalk a run for its money with Usher-level dance moves. The two were broken up by a spoken-word portion, voice by JB himself.
The whole thing was super emotional for the singer, as you can see in the Vine above.
Couldn’t get enough of the performance? Keep your eyes peeled; the “What Do You Mean?” music video is set to premiere shortly after the VMAs end tonight. Everything’s coming up Bieber.
