Halsey's unique pop persona has made her someone to watch for a while now. Her debut, Badlands, is an ambitious concept album, half inspired by her turbulent adolescence. The rest is a dystopic fairytale, and she's a fine, good storyteller.
The academic quality of her music translates live: She's studied, articulate and pointed. At BBC Radio 1 this week, the young singer took her talent and made a medley of it, singing Justin Bieber's hit "What Do You Mean?" and having it unravel into the Weeknd's "Often."
She manages to pick up on the heterosexual absurdity of both tunes, but keeps their power uncorrupted. Listen to it above around the 22:40 mark, then revisit our exclusive interview with Halsey from earlier this year.
